Roz Tillville hadn't had a chance to go shopping all week, and it wasn't until today she realized her need for the basic food stuffs. She was low on almost everything, and with Todd working all hours - trying to set up his nightclub in The Kingdom - she couldn't very well ask him to go shopping for her. Work had become so busy for her and Toffee Waterday. So on her day off, the only one she would be getting for a long time, she decide to spend it at the store. On her way out of her house, feeling a little down and her clothes not helping matters, she glanced towards the neighbours. Gasping, she held a hand over her mouth in utter shock.
"Chris?" she murmured to herself.
The man walked over to her, his hair blowing over his forehead in the cold wind. "Hey, Roz. This is probably not something you would have expected to happen. The thing is, I can't keep lying to everyone. I wasn't killed in that crash."
Roz felt herself rolling in a sea of mixed emotions. Fear, anger, hate, love, confusion, heartache and most of all betrayal. It didn't make sense, like she had stepped into a Black Hole and was in another Universe.
"I don't understand," was all she could say.
Chris came closer. "I was in trouble with some bad people, I mean terrible people. I needed to get away, just flee and never be seen again. But I couldn't take you with me, you had a perfect life here, even with the break-in, and you were happy here. I just couldn't let you ruin it all because of my mistakes. So I paid off a doctor to lie, and fled. It took a lot of planning, and I never put you in danger..."
"You nearly killed me," she interrupted.
"No, there wasn't a chance of that. It was planned, and you only had a few scrapes."
"You left me."
"I'm sorry."
Roz felt the tears rolling down her face and her hands trembling. "Roger and Lucy Rubyshine also hit that truck. She lost her baby, Roger was in a coma. You did all that to them. And, you left me alone and a wreck."
Chris turned away. "I didn't know the Rubyshine's were involved. I'm sorry, I should try and make it up to them."
"How can you make it up to them? Their baby is DEAD."
"Don't you think I feel bad now I know?" he yelled, almost as loud as she had.
A curtain flicked closed across the street at the Snowstep's house, Monty checking what the noise was about. Roz felt herself flush.
"Chris," a name she never thought she would say in this way again. "I don't know what you want. I have built a new life with another guy, who is living here, and I don't want anything to do with you. Please, just leave me alone." She walked away.
"Wait," Chris called after her.
Roz got into her car, and drove to the store. However, her mind was far from milk and bread now.
"MOM!" Holly Sundale screamed as she rushed into her mothers bedroom.
"Where's the fire?"
"It just started to snow! Can you believe it, it's Spring, and yesterday it was hot as hell, but look at it now."
Dawn looked out of the window. Tiny flakes fluttered down from the heavens to land softly with their counterparts. It a short time, the ground was dusted with the white powder.
"I really can't believe it," Dawn admitted. "I don't think it's snowed in The Kingdom in Spring for a long time."
"The school is closed, something about the roads not safe for the buses. Poppy is jumping on the sofa," Holly told her, spoken so fast Dawn had to think about the words before they make sense.
"I guess me going back to work is out of the question. I will have to stay and look after you pair."
"I can do it."
Dawn shook her head. "I don't want to leave Poppy with no adults. She
might need something you can't give her. I have used all my vacation time, but they told me I could pull a sickie if I had to."
"Well, if your sure. I need to call Wendy," Holly yelled as she rushed out of the room.
Dawn watched her go, chuckling and shaking her head. It was like the first snow in time, and everyone was getting excited over the new event. Although, she had to admit it, it was sort of exciting.
Sophie Snowstep slammed the door of her rental car so hard the whole vehicle shook. She couldn't believe how stupid she was being. Noah meant the world to her, yet she was kissing another guy. The gym hadn't released nearly as much stress as she had hoped. Starting up the engine, and wishing her car wasn't in the shop, Sophie shivered. Snow would make her drive even slower, and all she wanted to do was curl up on the sofa and watch some trashy TV. Her filming was over with, a fact she was glad to announce, so all she had to do now was wait until the appearances and interviews started. She had a few days to rest, and she planned to used them. The only thing was, all she could think about was what she had done with Dustin. It was only a kiss, but the thought of it made her hurt with guilt.
She put the car into gear and drove home.
